Paul begins his letter to the church at Colossae with a prayer. Paul encourages this group for their love for people and the way God has grown them to this point. Paul also prays for the ongoing spiritual growth of this community. Paul encourages the church to bear good fruit for God strengthened by His power and love.

The apostle Paul begins his exposition on Christ's position over all. Paul establishes the different roles played by Christ as fully God and fully human. Christ operates as head over His creation as well as His church. Paul argues against the Colossian false teachers in defense of Christ's supremacy.

Growing with God doesn't happen by human effort, but reflecting on the new identity we have in Christ. By knowing and believing in our new identity, our lives can become characterized by gratitude and being rooted in God's truth about what He says about us, which will keep us from being carried away by false teachings.

There are three common wrong turns Christians make when it comes to growing with God: 1) formalism, 2) mysticism, and 3) legalism. When we relate to God with a list of rules, emphasize spiritual experiences or outward service, we are prone to miss growing with God.

Living out of who God says we are includes focusing on our new identity and putting off the "old" self and way of living. Spiritual growth often results from thanking God for what He's done for us and relating to others in the new way He offers. As we focus in faith on who God says we are, gradually our behavior will reflect our inward beliefs.

As we live out of the new identity God has given us, we experience a new way of relating with others. This new lifestyle is characterized by love towards others, extending forgiveness based on God's forgiveness towards us, and an attitude of thanksgiving as we move into others' lives.

God has a specific design and way he desires us to live out our marriages and family life. Within marriage, God's emphasis is each partner playing their role within marriage. For the husband, that means to demonstrate sacrificial, loving leadership like Christ. For wives, this includes support and respecting the husband's leadership.

As Christians, we have been entrusted as ambassadors of God's message of forgiveness through Jesus. As we go out and try to tell others about Jesus and his offer of forgiveness, there are some principles that can assist us in this work from God: 1) devotion to prayer; 2) speaking in a way that accurately reflects Christ; and 3) exhibiting wise and authentic behavior to those who don't know Jesus.
